Ode to ELL and my Backlog

in Emerging Leader Labs, Gift Economies, Media, Social Change

Crap... it all got deleted and I have to re-write it.  Awesome.

M'Lissa (Roulson) Story did her Masters thesis using Emerging Leader Labs as a case study for Social Innovation Incubators. This is her presentation of her thesis. Okay, it's not exactly news/press, but it's actually kind of cooler. Somebody did a whole Masters thesis about ELL!
emaze.com // or whatever the title of M'Lissa's full thesis is. :)

New Kind of Commons: The Land Weaving Society

in Ceptr, Commons, Commonwealth, Currencies, Deep Wealth, Gift Economies, New Economy

aerial photo of landYou might know the expression among software developers: "Code is Law." It is a trueism about the abilities and limitations that the users of the software become bound to. And I see a world where this becomes quite literally true in the larger social context as we build new digital commons and distributed autonomous organizations where our agreements, and processes for sharing and accessing resources are quite literally encoded in the digital tools we use to share them and gain access to them.

I’d like to share a bit about a vision for a Land Weaving Society as an example of these patterns and processes -- a way to shift land access and use, by voluntary participation in a commons where owners "share" their land (or house, or buildings) with other members for various uses like hiking, camping, farming, firewood collection, fruit harvesting, etc.

Video from a TEDx talk from one of our lovely MetaCurrency leaders was just released. It's rather beautiful. Please take a few minutes to soak it in.

Reputation is Orthogonal to Exchange

in Currencies, Currency Design, Exchange, Gift Economies, Reputation

It feels like it's been a long time since I've posted about any of the principles of currency design that I've discovered in designing, building and launching currencies over the past 10 – 20 years.

This one seems worth specific mention, since it seems like such a frighteningly common mistake that everyone makes as they start to break out of the old school money model just a little bit.

It's tempting to blame Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom for setting this precedent in his depiction of Whuffie. I appreciate that he was at least creating a post-scarcity / post-monetary vision. But I don't think he started this problem, it’s just that many people fall prey to the same pattern of thinking because it's like the money we know.

Here’s the crux of it. Reputation currencies do NOT operate the same way as monetary currencies. Period.

Fantasies, Dreams, Harebrained Schemes

in Agile Learning Centers, Collective Intelligence, ecovillages, Emerging Leader Labs, Flow, Gift Economies, Magic, MetaCurrency

[Note: this is not the topic I said I would blog about as I ended yesterday’s post.]

Okay… I’ll admit it.  I’ve had some pretty harebrained schemes.

Abnormal. Uncomfortable. Ridiculous. Unreasonable. Outrageous, even.

Of course, most of the ones that I actually took action on have worked.  About the others, we will probably never know.

I’m committed to maintain some spark of unjaded idealism and allowing myself to dream big.  I have some crazy, big projects in the works: building eco-villages and inspiring and nourishing communities, making it possible for myself and others to live from our passions instead of from monetary-based survival, transforming education, business, and human collective intelligence...

But it’s tricky navigating the waters between deep rooted dreams and harebrained schemes, and making sure that I don’t get waylaid by flaky fantasies.

This video is from the second year of Emerging Leader Labs sharing our gratitude with the people who supported us. August 2013.

Emerging Leader Labs - Seed Project

in Commonwealth, Gift Economies, Gifts, Social Enterprise Incubator, Social Impact

I'm way overdue for an update here. I have about 20 partially written posts that I've just never finished. I guess I just need to put them up however they stand.

So Eric and I decided to translate all our abstract MetaCurrency theory into practical, engaging action and start Emerging Leader Labs.

We're creating a template for social impact incubators to flourish outside of the monetary economy.

Summer 2012 Eric and I ran a gift-economy based social change incubator. It was awesome! Ben Brownell captured much of the spirit of it in this video.

The Central Covenants of Successful Economies

in Commonwealth, Gift Economies, Gifts, Living Systems

Our commercial economy is headed for destruction. There are many contributing factors, but in the end it all boils down to the fact that we’ve broken the core covenants, contracts or agreements of successful economies. These rules exist for a reason and you can no more avoid them than you can the principles of mathematics or the laws of physics.

The commercial economy is completely dependent upon the two layers of underlying economies that it is built on. First, there is the social economy inside of which we raise our children, have real relationships and take care of each other. For example, we don’t pay parents to make babies, teach language, potty-train, or devote a couple decades of care and support. Parents “manufacture” the entire labor force for the market economy. They provide talented employees in a much more real way than head-hunting firms, yet earn no commissions for their years of work.
